Fujian: The Home of Chinese Tea

This is the hand that picks it. High in the mountains of Fujian, in south-east China, our founder's grandmother still tends the tea gardens her family has kept for generations. Before tea is a pretty pouch on a shelf, this is what it looks like: sun, soil, and a lifetime of care.

One of tea's true homelands

If Chinese tea has a heartland, Fujian is high on the list. Its misty, mountainous province has been growing and crafting tea for well over a thousand years, and an astonishing number of the world's most famous teas were born in these hills.

From Anxi in the south comes Tei Kwan Yin, the orchid-scented oolong. From the Wuyi Mountains in the north come Golden Eyebrow (Jin Jun Mei), all honey and dried fruit, and Lapsang Souchong — recognised as the very first black tea ever made. Fujian is also the home of white tea and of jasmine tea scenting. Few places on earth have given the tea world more.

One leaf, one family tree

Fujian's influence reaches well beyond its borders. Generations ago, Fujian farmers crossed the strait to Taiwan, carrying their tea plants and their craft with them. That heritage became Taiwan's celebrated oolongs — Dong Ding, the high-mountain teas of Alishan, the honeyed Oriental Beauty. Different island, same roots. Taste a Taiwanese oolong beside a Fujian one and you're really tasting two branches of a single family tree.
